GRRRL Power

GRRRL Power

Oct

A homage to girl bands, written and produced by Chelsea Wilson and Fem Belling.

Inspired by the soundtracks of our childhoods and the role models of the present, this special show celebrates the sheroes who unashamedly danced and sang their way to the top of the charts.

Over eight decades, girl bands have harmonised, danced and fought their way into the collective consciousness. Using pop music as their weapon, girl bands paired Riot Grrrl energy with songwriting genius (and some marketing prowess) to put feminism and female empowerment into the mainstream.

From the sweet harmonies of the ’40s to the anthems of the ’90s and beyond, girl bands have not just made music — they’ve made history. And now, four of Australia’s powerhouse vocalists are bringing their stories to life in a show that’s as empowering as it is entertaining.

Sing-a-long to iconic girl-band bangers in this high-energy show celebrating the queens, pioneers, rebel girls and femme fatales of the music industry.

From the trailblazing Andrews Sisters to the legendary Spice Girls. Plus, hear some of the greatest girl bands time forgot; Pink Lady, The Barry Sisters, Prince’s sexy protégées Vanity 6 and many more.

Bring your mum, your girlfriends, your lovers and the kids for a time-travelling romp through pop music. Get ready to dance, laugh, sing and roar GRRRL power!

Girl bands aren’t just about looking cute and singing about boys — they are about so much more.

We wanted to write a show that recognised the cultural impact that girl bands have had on popular culture. Often dismissed as saccharine, disposable, and lacking depth, girl bands have not received the credit they are due.

Although often sexualised and undervalued, the message behind girl bands is one of empowerment. Throughout the decades, girl bands have inspired women to feel strong in themselves — to leave abusive relationships, to step into their power and to lean into the strength of female friendships. Girl bands have advocated for safe sex, for equal rights, and for equal pay. It’s time to tell their stories.”  — Chelsea Wilson
